Lithium Safety Containers supports the municipality of Hollands Kroon in the safe handling of large-scale unsafe storage of shared scooter batteries

PRESS RELEASE

Den Bosch, March 4, 2026 – Lithium Safety Containers B.V. was commissioned by the municipality of Hollands Kroon to carry out work to secure a potentially dangerous situation surrounding the storage of thousands of electric shared scooters and lithium-ion batteries. The municipality found a large number of scooters in a warehouse in Van Ewijcksluis, stored under conditions that did not comply with the applicable safety guidelines and which posed an increased fire risk.

An estimated 4,000 electric shared scooters were stored in an old grain warehouse near the inner harbor. The presence of highly flammable batteries, combined with limited space and a building with asbestos-containing roof and facade materials, caused great concern among residents and relevant authorities. A fire in this situation could have had serious consequences for the surrounding area.

Joint safety plan with municipality and emergency services

Following the report from the municipality, Lithium Safety Containers worked with the Safety Region, the fire department, and the municipality of Hollands Kroon to draw up a plan to deal with the situation in a controlled and safe manner. The focus was on:

  • Inspection and testing of lithium-ion batteries present

  • Identifying damaged or unstable batteries

  • The responsible disposal of batteries that were no longer usable or potentially hazardous

Safe transport and temporary storage in accordance with ADR

The batteries and scooters were then moved in accordance with the applicable ADR transport regulations to a temporary safe location designated by the municipality on the industrial estate in Middenmeer, where there is sufficient space to meet all safety requirements.

Lithium Safety Containers took care of temporary storage in specially designed safety containers and locked scooters, ensuring that the batteries remained protected from external influences.

Use of Lithium Safety Containers with camera surveillance

As part of the temporary safety solution, three Lithium Safety Containers were delivered, including thermal camera surveillance. This allows the storage location with the batteries still in the scooters to be continuously monitored, and in the event of a suspicious temperature development or incident, the control room can immediately escalate the situation and alert the fire department.

Safety as a priority in lithium-ion storage

Incidents involving lithium-ion batteries can lead to serious fires, explosions, and the release of toxic substances. This underscores the importance of professional storage solutions and rapid intervention when large quantities of batteries are found in unsafe conditions.

Bram van Beers, CEO of Lithium Safety Containers, explains:"This situation shows how important it is that lithium-ion batteries are never stored in an uncontrolled manner and without appropriate safety measures. By working quickly with the municipality and emergency services, we were able to manage the risk and stabilize the storage in a safe manner."
